How to Stop Your Puppy From Chewing

July 3, 2018

How can I get my puppy to stop chewing on everything?

Here are some tips on how to discourage your puppy from chewing on everything:

It’s time to puppy proof the house! Make sure you remove anything you don’t want your puppy to chew on or that might hurt your fur-ball. That means putting away anything that he can reach, including pillows, remotes, magazines, etc.

Don’t leave your puppy alone in an open area that hasn’t been puppy proofed until he learns to not chew on things around the house.

If you see that your puppy begins to chew on something he should not, make a loud noise to grab his attention. Take the object away from him and redirect him to his chew toys. Make sure to have more than one chew toy around the house accessible to him. You can learn more about which toys you should get your pup in our previous blog: 5 Must-Have Puppy Toys.

Chewing deterrents for puppies are a great way to discourage chewing. They are designed to taste bad without damaging any furniture or object sprayed on. Just spray the items that you cannot put away, or any other objects you see your pup likes to chew on.

Puppies tend to chew excessively out of boredom so make sure you keep your best friend entertained. You must give your puppy plenty of physical and mental exercise. If they get bored, they will do things to entertain themselves and you’ll probably won’t like their choice in activity.  You can read more tips on how to keep your puppy entertained in our previous blog: Is Your Puppy Bored?

Once your puppy learns what is acceptable to chew on, you’ll have more trust in leaving him alone in the house without worrying that he will destroy everything he can get his teeth on.
