In an event held in Pembroke Pines, FL, Petland had the opportunity of helping families with children suffering from Hunter Syndrome with the gift of a companion.
The event, which took place at Petland Pembroke Pines, came about after Luis Marquez, the store owner, felt motivated to gift every boy with the debilitating disease in Broward County with a furry companion. He had first heard about Hunter Syndrome when he met 4 year old Sebastian Estevez. Estevez, who suffers from the disease, cannot produce a specific enzyme that breaks down cellular waste. As a result, he will eventually lose the ability to walk, talk, and eat.
Non-profit organization, Project Alive is involved with the families of these children to raise awareness of the disease and bring a cure to Hunter Syndrome through extensive research. Their goal is to raise $2.5 million for gene therapy trials that could potentially save or prolong the lives of these boys.
Fortunately, with their newest puppy friends, the boys and their families will be able to come home to a loyal and loving companion who will show them unconditional love and support, above anything else.
